Quantitative, Qualitative, And Mixed Research - 2056 Words

Executive Summary This paper compares and contrasts three different approaches utilised in research on technology: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research. A description of these three approaches is followed by a discussion of how the components of these three approaches differ. Philosophical assumptions, methods/types, purposes/goals, and data analysis are examined. In order to enhance the understanding of these different approaches, six mobile technology research projects are discussed with a focus on these components. Finally, critiques and lessons learned with each approach is presented. 2. Introduction This paper begins by describing quantitative, qualitative, and mixed approaches and the key elements utilised in research on technology. This is followed by a comparison of all three and a discussion of components upon which these three approaches to research on technology differ. In order to enhance the understanding of these differences, six mobile technology research projects are discussed with a focus on these components. Finally, critiques and lessons learned is presented. 3. Literature Review While most researchers recognize the existence of the two approaches for conducting technological research: quantitative and qualitative, there seems to be three perspectives as to how these different approaches are viewed and conducted.
